Native American Indigenous Studies - October 24
Monday, October 24, 2022 | 2:00pm-4:30pm
This is the fourth of four UVA undergraduate class sections offered at The Center. You must register for each class section separately (links below to other three sessions).
"Introduction to Native American Indigenous Studies: Intergenerational Conversation about (Mis)Representations"
From Pocahontas to Chief Wahoo, Native Americans have been portrayed as noble savages, brave warriors, spiritual shamans, and Indian princesses, greatly shaping the collective imaginings of Native peoples. This course offers an introduction to the broad field of Native American studies with a focus on the themes of identity and (mis)representation.
Professor Kasey Jernigan (UVA, American Studies and Anthropology) will teach four of her undergraduate classes at The Center. Undergraduate students taking this class will also come to The Center, bringing together young people and elders to engage in discussion as a way to bring in more voices, experience, wisdom, and thoughts. We hope to develop a long-term, sustainable course that brings community and young people together to learn and discuss some of the most pressing issues among Native Americans and the general population. We hope you'll consider joining us for an exciting and thoughtful engagement and bring your thoughts, ideas, questions, and experiences to share.
Each meeting will involve discussion of materials (articles, chapters, podcasts, films, TV shows, etc.) which will be provided ahead of time. There will be a link on this webpage - stay tuned.
Monday, Oct 24: Gendered Violence, Settler Colonialism, and #MMIW
Just in time for Halloween, this week we explore the scope of violence against Native Women. Native Americans make up less than 2% of the population, but they represent more than 5% of its missing persons cases. Nationally, it is non-Native men who commit the majority of assaults against Native women. We will think through the ways these real statistics are linked with sexualized Indian Halloween costumes (e.g., "Pocahottie").
Expectations:
Come prepared to engage with undergraduates from UVA around issues important to Native American/Indigenous peoples. This will look like small group discussions, collective film-screening, and questions and discussions. This is a great opportunity for inter-generational dialogue and learning across time/space about Native Studies. We value perspectives from all people and are looking to think through some of the toughest questions in Indian Country today. You may be as active or passive as you feel comfortable, as students and the professor will lead topics, but we encourage active engagement, as this makes for richer meetings and learning experiences.

Thursday, November 3, 2022 | 10:00am-12:00pm
Five Thursdays, from November 3 - December 8th 10-12pm (except on Nov. 24th)
The process of photography offers individuals with many potential decisions that must be made in the process of capturing a quality image. There are technical decisions that are critical to the quality of the photograph, such as focus and depth of field, as well as the exposure triangle of ISO, shutter speed and aperture. There are also aesthetic decisions less technical in nature that truly makes the difference in one's effort to capture a dramatic and interesting image that attracts the viewer. Examples of the aesthetic decisions include choice of subject matter, timing, composition, quality of light, and angle of view. This six session class will provide the participants with the opportunity to learn how to enhance their decision-making skills resulting in stronger, more dramatic images.

Register in advance here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAtcu6hpjIiHde2-bQ_hsAWyZsfd_fv3A1n
About the Speaker:
Kim Porter, CFRS is the Executive Director of Be a Part of the Conversation. Having served as the Community Program Coordinator and Parent Liaison for Be a Part of the Conversation since its inception in 2011, she was named Executive Director of this vital organization in 2014.
Kim's Certified Family Recovery Specialist (CFRS) credential was created for adults who have been directly impacted by another person's substance use disorder. The CFRS shares their lived experience with other families to provide recovery support services. A CFRS is trained to help families move into and through the recovery process.
Kim is the parent of someone in long term recovery, which led her to explore the impact of addiction on individuals and their families.
Kim earned a Bachelor of Science in Journalism at West Virginia University, with a concentration in public relations. She was proud to serve as WVU's student body president in 1982-83. Kim started out as an advertising account executive at a newspaper, then learned the graphic design trade while working with her mentor and friend, Chuck Moran, at his design firm in Charlottesville, Virginia. Kim worked as a graphic designer and marketing consultant since 1985.
Kim currently lives in Newtown Square, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. She previously lived in Horsham Township for 22 years, where she and Michael raised two wonderful children who support this amazing journey she has embarked upon.
Activities & Honors:
The Advisory Board for The Bridge Way School, Pennsylvania's only recovery high school
Recipient of Caron's "Brian Early Community Leadership Award" and the "Catherine Caron Outstanding Volunteer Leadership Award."
Recipient of Synergy Houses' "You Make a Difference" family award.
"When my family was impacted by addiction, our world suddenly became a dark and frightening place with little understanding of where to turn for help. Our family's journey through recovery compelled me to explore creative ways to help raise awareness among those who often struggle in silence with a loved one's substance use, misuse or addiction. I have found that most people have an open heart and mind, and want to learn all they can to support those who are in pain, as well as those in recovery. Helping to create Be a Part of the Conversation has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my experience, strength and hope!"

Raised Razed
Tuesday, December 6, 2022 | 10:00am-12:00pm
Raised/Razed is a documentary feature film about the lasting effects of Urban Renewal on Vinegar Hill, a large African American neighborhood in the heart of Charlottesville, Virginia. For nearly a century, Vinegar Hill—like hundreds of Black communities across America—thrived as the center of business, education, religious, and cultural life, before being destroyed by the federally-backed and locally-executed Urban Renewal program.
After two years of extensive research, Raised/Razed has woven original audio interviews of former Vinegar Hill residents from the early 1980s with modern-day interviews from their descendants, to bring the neighborhood back to life as it existed at its height and to take viewers into the homes, classrooms, and businesses of community members.
This story draws connections between Charlottesville's Vinegar Hill and Durham, North Carolina's Hayti neighborhood, which was also destroyed, to show how Urban Renewal irreversibly transformed the lives of people across the country.

She then served for thirty years as an historian for the Department of the Army (DA). Dr. Coker's interest in World War II prisoners of war (POWs) began at Fort Gordon while serving as the deputy command historian. She has published many articles in professional journals and chapters from her dissertation on South Carolina's Revolutionary War Loyalists in books. While a DA historian, she published numerous books and pamphlets, including A History of Fort Gordon; World War II Prisoners of War in Georgia: Camp Gordon's POWs; Mobilization of the U.S. Army Reserve for the Korean War and The Indispensable Force: The U.S. Army Reserve (1990–2010). She retired in 2015 and now resides in Richmond, Virginia. In 2019, she and Jason Wetzel published Georgia POW Camps In World War II. Dr. Coker currently is working on a book about U.S. Army combat historians to be released in 2023 by Casemate Publishers.
Virginia Prisoner of War Camps in World War II
During World War II, Virginians watched as German and Italian prisoners invaded the Old Dominion. At least seventeen thousand Germans and countless Italians lived in more than twenty camps across the state and worked on five military installations. Farmers hired POWs to pick apples. Fertilizer companies, lumberyards and hospitals hired them. At first a phenomenon of war in Virginia's backyard, these former enemy combatants became familiar to many—often developing a rapport with their employers. Join Dr. Coker as she takes you on a tour of the camps, the daily lives of the POWs and the enduring effect they had on Virginia.
